Ratan Tata is a renowned Indian industrialist and philanthropist who served as the chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, from 1991 to 2012, and then as interim chairman from October 2016 through February 2017 ¹. Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, India, Tata graduated from Cornell University with a degree in architecture in 1959 


Early Life and Education
Tata was born into a Parsi Zoroastrian family and was the son of Naval Tata, who was adopted by Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata, the founder of the Tata Group ¹. He studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and later at the Riverdale Country School in New York City ¹.

Career
Tata joined the Tata Group in 1961 and worked on the shop floor of Tata Steel ¹. He later succeeded J.R.D. Tata as chairman of Tata Sons upon the latter's retirement in 1991 ¹. Under his leadership, the Tata Group acquired Tetley, Jaguar Land Rover, and Corus, transforming it into a global business ¹.

Philanthropy
Tata is a prolific philanthropist, supporting education, medicine, and rural development ¹. He donated $28 million to Cornell University to provide financial aid to undergraduate students from India ¹. The Tata Education and Development Trust also endowed a $50 million Tata Scholarship Fund at Cornell University ¹.

Awards and Honors
Tata received the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honor, in 2008 ¹. He also received the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honor, in 2000 ¹.
